Pancreatitis

Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas due to premature activation of digestive enzymes released by the pancreas, causing severe pain and inflammation.

Risk Factors?

Several dog breeds are predisposed to pancreatitis, including Boxers, Briards, Cavalier King Charles spaniels, Cocker spaniels, Collies, Shelties, Schnauzers, and Yorkshire terriers.

Risk Factors?

Ingestion of high fat and low protein food diet can lead to pancreatitis. If your dog is a trash can raider or eats too many sugary or fatty table scraps, he is at an increased risk for pancreatitis.

How to feed?

Ultra-processed diets, like kibble, have been found to pose an increased risk of pancreatitis in dogs. Fresh real food with high-quality protein and animal fats is recommended.

How to feed?

Foods recommended for a dog with pancreatitis include lean meats such as white meat of chicken, lean and low-fat ground beef, beef heart, and beef kidney. Egg whites, cooked winter squash, pumpkin, potatoes, and sweet potatoes are all well tolerated after episodes of pancreatitis.
