amylase

Amylase is a digestive enzyme that is produced by the pancreas in dog. In most other mammals it is also in the saliva. It starts the breakdown of starch.

Why we feed?

even though dogs do not produce enough amylase to be fed high starch diets, most kibbles are high in starch. This results in weight gain for those dogs who eat high starch diets. Malnutrition can also result as the dogs cannot digest all components of kibble.

Why we feed

How to feed?

Although dogs can digest some vegetation, it's best if it is steamed or pureed since amylase cannot break down whole vegetation!

Additional info?

Animals such as koalas produce plenty of amylase because they are meant to eat vegetation!
