jacobson's organ

An organ located in the roof of the animal's mouth. The Jacobson's organ can detect pheromones for mating or marking territory.

What it is?

The Jacobson's organ shows just how amazing a dog's sense of smell is and why smell is so important when feeding a dog. Texture, taste, and smell plays a big role in what a dog wants to or doesn't want to eat. Their sense of smell is also important because humans often use dogs to find missing people, locate drugs, and to detect cancers.

What it is

How it applies?

The Jacobson's organ detects chemical smells essentially through humidity. Dogs will sometimes lick the air to better trap smells into their Jacobson's organ.
