aafco

AAFCO is a voluntary membership association of local, state and federal agencies charged by law to regulate the sale and distribution of animal feeds and animal drug remedies

Who are they?

Pet foods that want to join the popular market and use the "AAFCO" statement of nutritionally complete and balanced, they must meet AAFCO standards

Who are they

Why they're important?

US states do not create their own pet food regulations - they rely solely on AAFCO standards. However, AAFCO was originally created to oversee feedlot animals (livestock, etc). Pet food brands will print an AAFCO statement on their product to explain if/how their food meets AAFCO guidelines, for example, "complete and balanced," or "for supplemental feeding only."

Additional info?

Although some foods may be AAFCO "balanced" this does not always mean your pup is getting all the nutrients they need to thrive
