beef spleen

The spleen is an important part of the immune system. It clears out old blood cells, and stores white blood cells and platelets, which are both important in fighting off infections.

Why we feed?

Although liver is densely packed with nutrients, because it can only make up 5% of your dog’s raw diet, something else must be supplemented in to complete your dog’s diet. That’s where other secreting organs, such as spleen, come in. Spleen is packed with nutrients, moreso than meat and bone. Your dog’s raw diet needs 5% other secreting organs to balance it out.

Why we feed

How to feed?

Generally speaking, spleen makes up 5% of a raw diet (with the added 5% liver). Most dogs love organ meats, but if yours is picky, you can make organ cubes, which consists of ground up organ mixed with ground up meat, goat’s milk, kefir, veggie blend, or bone broth.

Additional info?

When DIY'ing a raw diet, be cautious about mixing spleen and liver together. While this is perfectly fine to do, some dogs need a slower transition because two secreting organs can cause loose, dark stools.
