Shiitake mushrooms are one of the most well-known natural sources of trehalose. The use of trehalose in dogs must be monitored closely because dogs have varying levels of trehalase, the enzyme required to digest trehalose. Too much trehalose in dogs with lower levels of trehalase can cause gastrointestinal disorders. 

Mushrooms containing spermidine and cruciferous vegetables containing sulforaphane promote autophagy. Spermidine has been linked to cellular autophagy, contributing to anti-aging effects and improved cellular health. At the same time, sulforaphane stimulates protective autophagic processes, aiding in the reduction of oxidative stress in cells.

Mushrooms containing spermidine include shitake, button mushrooms, Bay Bolete, and oyster mushrooms. Vegetables that contain sulforaphane include broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, cabbage, and cauliflower. Processing methods for vegetables and mushrooms, like chopping, pureeing, or lightly steaming, break down tough plant fibers, making them more digestible and bioavailable to the dog.

Apoptosis is a form of programmed cell death that occurs in multicellular organisms. It is a highly regulated and controlled process that plays a crucial role in removing unnecessary or dysfunctional cells, thereby maintaining the health and stability of the body. Several critical features characterize apoptosis, including cell shrinkage, chromatin condensation, membrane blebbing, formation of apoptotic bodies, and DNA fragmentation. 

Cell shrinking, also called cell condensation, during apoptosis is when a cell undergoing programmed cell death decreases in size due to the loss of cell volume. The trace mineral selenium inhibits cancer development in various experimental animal models. Selenium supplementation has been studied for its effects on DNA damage and apoptosis in canine prostate cells. This trace mineral is thought to decrease DNA damage and increase apoptosis in prostate epithelial cells, suggesting its potential protective role against cancer.

Fresh foods containing selenium, including Brazil nuts, seafood, liver, kidneys, eggs, mushrooms, and muscle meat from pasture-raised pigs, cows, turkeys, and chickens, induce apoptosis.
