Malocclusion is a dental condition where the teeth are misaligned, resulting in an improper bite. This misalignment can occur due to a variety of factors, including genetic predisposition, developmental issues, or trauma. Malocclusion is often categorized into different types based on the specific nature of the misalignment, such as overbite (where the upper jaw extends beyond the lower jaw), underbite (where the lower jaw extends beyond the upper jaw), and crossbite (where some teeth do not align properly with their counterparts).

For instance, Poodles and their mixes frequently exhibit malocclusions, with many cases involving teeth being displaced towards the tongue on the mandibular canine teeth. Labrador Retrievers also show a notable prevalence of dental misalignments, suggesting a familial pattern to these conditions. Due to their small size and often crowded dental arches, Chihuahuas are similarly susceptible to malocclusions. Pit Bull Terriers and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are also listed among the breeds with higher instances of malocclusion, which can manifest in various forms, from minor misalignments to severe dental problems requiring intervention.

Diagnosis of malocclusion typically involves a thorough oral examination by a veterinarian, who may also use dental X-rays to assess the extent of the misalignment and identify any underlying issues.
