Grain Fed Updated on: August 4th, 2019

Grain fed cows are fed in large feedlots called concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and are fed a grain-based feed, usually of soy or corn. They are usually overfed and administered heavy doses of antibiotics to combat the illnesses developed from trying to digest grains and overcrowding.

why we feed

Grain fed cows generally have high levels of saturated fat and a high omega 6:3 ratio. Diets high in saturated fat and an imbalanced omega 6:3 ratio can lead to health issues in the dog such as organ diseases and cancer.

how to feed

Grain fed meat is usually more accessible and at a lower cost than grass fed meat. Choose grass fed meat when possible but if not, the diet can be balanced with omega 3 fatty acids from whole fish and other fresh food sources.

Additional info

Since grains can cause intolerance/allergies, some dogs benefit more from grass fed proteins versus grain fed proteins.
